Interesting Facts

Calvet Winery, founded by Jean-Marie Calvet in 1818, was originally located in the Rhone Valley region. Already in 1823 an additional Calvet branch was opened in the center of Bordeaux, and several years later new branches of the company appeared in the best wine regions of France. Octave Calvet continued to successfully develop the business started by his father. In 1870, in Médoc, he began building the “Calvet” castle in the style of Louis XVI. The cellars of the estate originally had a total area of 16 thousand square meters, later they were expanded three more times. In 1886, a new branch of the company was opened in Argentina, and three years later, one of Octave’s sons, Jean Calvet, settled in Burgundy, which underlined the company’s commitment to producing high-quality wines from grapes grown in the country’s best vineyards. It was Jean who, at the beginning of the 20th century, proposed to put the personalized seal “Calvet” on the bottles, which was supposed to guarantee the excellent quality of the drinks and make them recognizable in the world market. Since 1920, the symbol of the company is the eagle, and its corporate color is red (the color of red wine).
Jean Calvet has always taken the process of creating wine very seriously, therefore, since 1930, he financed the work of a special laboratory created by him, which was engaged in scientific research in the field of winemaking. It is from that time that stage-by-stage quality control has been carried out at all the company’s factories.
From 1982 to 1997, Calvet was alternately a division of the Whitbread Group and Allied Domecq. Then, for 10 years under the leadership of Jack Druno, she again became an independent “player” in the wine market. Since 2007, Calvet has been part of Les Grands Chais de France, the largest group of companies in France.
The company “Le Grand Che de France” (GCF Group) has existed since 1979 and today is considered the largest producer and exporter of French wines. The management of the company considers its main task to be the production of very high quality wines available to the consumer, therefore the GCF Group branches are present in all significant wine-making regions of France. The head office of the GCF Group and one of the factories are located in Petersbach (Northern Alsace), there are also factories in Bordeaux, Beaujolais, Languedoc-Roussillon and other areas. In addition, to expand the range of wines, the company acquired vineyards and wineries abroad – in the USA, Chile, Germany and Spain.

In order to expand the range dictated by the needs of consumers, the French company Les Grands Chais de France has released a line of Californian wines “Gold Country”. It features bright, fresh fruit wines made from grapes grown on the Pacific coast in California’s sunny central valley.
“Gold Country” Cabernet Sauvignon is a refreshing red wine with a pleasant fruit and berry aroma and a soft, rounded taste. The wine goes well with cold appetizers, red meat, game and various cheeses.
Les Grands Chais de France (GСF) is a group of companies founded in Petersbach in 1979 by a man named Joseph Helfrich. The main location of the companies is Vosges du Nord (in the South of France). Today Le Grand Chee de France is a large and successful company engaged in the production of high-quality French wine and is aimed mainly at export (over 70% of production). GСF owns vineyards in many wine regions of the country – Alsace, Loire Valley, Bordeaux, Beaujolais and Languedoc-Roussillon.
A distinctive feature of the GСF company is the desire to preserve old traditions, combining them with innovations in the world of winemaking. This is due to the vast experience of more than 1200 employees of the company. Les Grands Chais de France has an annual turnover of around 700 million euros. Production volume – about 1,000,000 bottles per day. The company’s production area occupies 12.8 hectares.
